The Margaret Sanger Papers Project is a scholarly editing and digital publication initiative hosted by New York University, led by Esther Katz. The project has sourced, organized, edited, and published more than 50,000 documents, including Sanger’s correspondence, speeches, pamphlets, articles, and organizational papers.
Its output includes multi-volume print editions along with a dynamic digital platform featuring both full-text transcriptions and images. The digital edition supports keyword search across documents, thematic access, and browsing by time period or topic. A current focus is the “Speech and Article” series (1911–1960), while past volumes document her domestic activism; the forthcoming Volume 4 addresses her international birth control efforts. The archives also serve as a foundation for historical research, feminist studies, and public health scholarship.
The project highlights Sanger’s intellectual networks, campaign strategies, and evolving advocacy across changing social and legal landscapes. Interactive teaching materials and curated document sets support pedagogical use. The NYU hosting reflects a partnership between academic libraries and the history department, making Sanger’s extensive legacy accessible to scholars and the public alike.
