The Howard Thurman Papers Project, founded in 1992, aims to preserve and share the lifelong documentary record of Howard Thurman—spanning approximately 63 years and comprising some 58,000 items including correspondence, sermons, speeches, and unpublished writings.
Published by University of South Carolina Press, the multi-volume print edition began in 2009, with Volume 1 covering his early years through his historic visit to India. Subsequent volumes chronicle his time as dean at Marsh Chapel, his development of interfaith leadership, and his broader ministerial legacy. The project has now made these volumes available online free to the public, supported by major grants and overseen by editor Walter Earl Fluker.
In addition to editing, the Project engages in oral history initiatives and public education programming to advance Thurman’s legacy in ethics, spiritual leadership, and social justice.
