The Elizabeth Montagu Letters project, based at Swansea University, digitizes and publishes the correspondence of Elizabeth Montagu (1718–1800), a prominent 18th-century British social reformer, patron of the arts, and leading figure in the Bluestocking Circle. Her letters provide a rich source for studying Enlightenment-era intellectual networks, women’s literary culture, and social reform movements in Britain.
The project offers transcriptions, scholarly commentary, and contextual information that shed light on Montagu’s role in shaping literary tastes, philanthropy, and the status of women writers. Her correspondence reveals insights into the cultural and political life of her time, including relationships with other prominent thinkers and writers. This digital collection is an important resource for historians of literature, gender studies, and 18th-century British society.
