The MGPP program at UCLA’s African Studies Center focuses on the legacy of Marcus Garvey and the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). It examines Garvey’s historical significance as a leader within the broader African and African‑American struggle for freedom, dignity, and racial consciousness.
Through this initiative, MGPP explores Garvey’s global impact, including the thousands of UNIA chapters worldwide, and his role in articulating a visionary discourse of self‑emancipation, racial pride, and diaspora connectivity. The program situates him within both Caribbean and African‑American intellectual traditions.
While the current site includes general information and faculty contacts, its value lies in highlighting initial research and outreach efforts related to the Garvey movement’s continuing cultural and political resonance across the African diaspora.
