The Papers of Martin Van Buren seeks an Associate Editor for a twelve-month appointment. The successful hire will be required to be in residence at the project office located in Cumberland University’s Vise Library.

The position will require the editor to catalog, transcribe, annotate, and/or proofread documents for the project, which will produce a digital edition that makes available first-pass transcriptions of approximately 13,000 known Van Buren documents.

Candidate must possess:

  • The ability to work independently
  • Exceptional analytical and writing skills
  • Proficiency in reading and comprehending nineteenth-century handwriting

Minimum education:

  • Master of Arts degree in history or related field.
  • Experience with documentary editing or a research specialty in U.S. politics between 1800 and 1865 will be considered a plus.
