The Papers of Martin Van Buren seeks an assistant editor for a twelve-month appointment (July 2021-June 2022), with the possibility of extended employment dependent on continued grant funding. The position will require the assistant editor to catalog, transcribe, annotate, and/or proofread documents for the project, which is producing digital and print editions of approximately 13,500 known Van Buren documents. The assistant editor will also be the primary liaison with student interns/workers.

Qualifications: M.A. in history or related field (Ph.D. preferred); ability to work both independently and as part of a team; exceptional analytical and organizational skills; and proficiency in reading nineteenth-century handwriting. Experience with documentary editing and/or a research specialty in U.S. history between 1800 and 1865 will be considered a plus. The successful hire will be required to be in residence at the project office in Cumberland University’s Vise Library. Salary: $46,500 for 12-month appointment.
