  2. Documentary Editing: A Hands-On Introduction

At the joint conference held by the Association for Documentary Editing and Recovering the U.S. Hispanic Literary Heritage Program, eLaboratories will co-host a free workshop to introduce the work of documentary editing.

This workshop, which will be held in-person on October 8, 9:00 AM–12:00 PM, will provide an introduction to the print and digital publication of archival documents as a type of recovery practice. Topics covered will include defining project goals, audience, and scope; transcribing and annotating archival documents; and key considerations for digital publishing, including how technical choices both can shape and be shaped by project goals.

This is an introductory workshop designed for people with no prior experience in document transcription, annotation, or digital publishing. Participants do not need to have a specific project in mind. Workshop organizers will provide sample documents, but participants may also work with items of their own. Everyone is encouraged to bring a laptop or tablet on which to work (workshop registrants will receive more specific suggestions about technology via email in advance of the event). Register for the workshop today!
