The recent discovery of four new documents written by John Dickinson in 1775 has been reported by The New York Times. They offer a remarkable view into the proceedings of the Second Continental Congress and Dickinson’s previously unknown efforts to avert separation from Great Britain. The documents, which have been transcribed and annotated by the John Dickinson Writings Project, will appear in a special forum in the William & Mary Quarterly in July, along with interpretive essays by JDP founder and chief editor Jane E. Calvert, David Como, William B. Ewald, Jonathan Gienapp, and Jack N. Rakove. In the meantime, images of the documents are at the NYT, and transcriptions are at the WMQ.
