Preserving the Past. Connecting the Present. Inspiring the Future.

The Association for Documentary Editing (ADE) brings together editors, scholars, teachers, librarians, archivists, and others dedicated to uncovering, preserving, and sharing primary source materials and cultural artifacts. Since 1978, the ADE has fostered collaboration, set professional standards, and advanced the field of documentary editing through publications, research, and community exchange.

From print editions to digital projects and searchable databases, our members’ work keeps history accessible and relevant—ensuring that the voices and stories of the past continue to inform and inspire future generations.

History

Founded in 1978, the ADE was created to support and connect those dedicated to recovering, editing, and preserving historical documents. Since its founding, the ADE has fostered collaboration and set standards that keep the past alive and accessible to all.

Committees

The ADE relies on member-led committees to guide its programs, publications, and initiatives. These committees foster collaboration, uphold professional standards, and help shape the organization’s direction each year.

Officers

The ADE is led by a dedicated team of elected officials, including the President, President-Elect, Past President, Secretary, Treasurer, Director of Publications, Councilors-at-Large, and a DEI Officer. Each officer brings expertise in documentary editing, scholarship, and leadership to guide the ADE’s mission and operations.

Awards

The ADE honors excellence in documentary editing through several annual awards recognizing scholarship, service, and innovation in the field. These awards celebrate outstanding contributions that advance the preservation and understanding of historical records.
