The Association for Documentary Editing (ADE) is excited to announce “Out of the Archive: A 250+ Year Mosaic of American Documents.” Launched as the nation commemorates 250 years of independence, this digital gallery features documents from throughout the history of what came to be called the United States of America.
Written before and after 1776 and in multiple languages, the documents reflect the efforts of documentary editors and recovery practitioners to make historical texts accessible to today’s readers. From letters and diaries to speeches and lawsuits, they are samples from many projects dedicated to publishing the words of diverse people who shaped the lands that are, have been, or were influenced by the United States. “Out of the Archive” enables users to browse US history through those words and highlights the work that the ADE supports.
You can explore the gallery at https://documentaryediting.org/250th-gallery/. You also can submit a document that you have made accessible for inclusion in the gallery. The ADE looks forward to seeing it grow to include the words of even more people of varied backgrounds, experiences, regions, languages, and beliefs.
