The Bushrod Washington Papers project provides digitized access to the correspondence, legal documents, and personal papers of Bushrod Washington (1762–1829), a U.S. Supreme Court Justice and nephew of George Washington. Hosted by the University of Virginia, the collection sheds light on early American jurisprudence, family networks, and political life in the post-Revolutionary period.
The archive offers scholarly transcriptions and annotations that contextualize Washington’s legal opinions, political correspondence, and estate records, including those related to Mount Vernon. The project is an important resource for historians of law, the early republic, and the Washington family’s legacy. It facilitates a nuanced understanding of judicial history and social dynamics in the early United States.
