Job Announcement: Historian/Editor for the North Carolina Civil War Roster Project

The Historical Publications Office of the North Carolina Office of Archives & History seeks to hire a historian/editor for the NC Civil War Roster Project. This work is an inventory of the state’s Civil War troops which first went to press in 1966 and is currently in its twenty-second volume. This position will help advance work on United States and USCT units and soldiers and sailors from North Carolina.

This is a full-time permanent position with benefits. The position is based at the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources building in downtown Raleigh, NC.

Key Responsibilities:The principal responsibility of the editor of the Civil War Roster will be to compile and prepare lists of units and troops based on primary and secondary sources. This work entails historical research, fact checking, and editorial judgment. The editor may also contribute research and/or writing to unit histories and narratives. As a member of the Historical Research and Publications office, the editor may contribute to other research and publication projects for the Office of Archives and History.

Duties include, but are not limited to:Conducting research on North Carolina Civil War soldiers, sailors, and units, particularly US Colored Troops and other Federal service membersPreparing and checking drafts of troop rostersWriting and editing unit historiesResponding to public requests for information
