Primary Purpose of the Position:

The primary purpose of the position is to serve as managing editor of the North Carolina Historical Review, a peer-reviewed quarterly journal on North Carolina history. More about the Review is at https://ncdcr.gov/nchr. Strong candidates will have experience in historical method, a keen eye for detail, skill in organization, and the ability to communicate with confidence and tact.

Key Responsibilities:

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Appraising, selecting, and editing articles and all other materials for the quarterly journal.
  • Managing the editing of the Review from concept through delivery.
  • Coordinating efforts with other editorial staff and graphic designer to create finished copy for print.
  • Communicating with authors, subscribers, and vendors.
  •  Assisting with subscription processing and maintenance.
  • Supporting publication of research on North Carolina history and culture that accurately portrays or interprets the diverse lived experiences of the state’s people.

Qualified candidates must have or be able to do: 

  • Demonstrated experience in editing manuscripts in English for grammar and clarity according to a style guide.
  • Experience managing multiple concurrent tasks in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Experience communicating with the public clearly, concisely, and tactfully.

Management preferences:

  • Demonstrated experience editing historical manuscripts for grammar and clarity according to the Chicago Manual of Style.
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing primary and secondary historical sources to evaluate evidence, arguments, and conclusions.
  • Training or experience in the history of the United States and/or North Carolina and the American South, generally gained through completing an MA in history or a related field, or through equivalent work experience.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Master’s degree in English, journalism, history, or related field from an appropriately accredited institution;
or
Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, history, or related field from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in a profession requiring research and/or editing as a major job skill;
or
An equivalent combination of education and experience.
