Creating Communities of Student Editors

June 24, 2022 @ 11:00 am - 12:15 pm EDT

[ A+ ] /[ A- ]

Presenters: Clayton McCarl (University of North Florida)

Student Panelists: Sarah Dumitrascu (Florida Atlantic University), Stacey Harmer (University of North Florida), Lynne Hemmingway (University of Georgia), Melinda Peacock (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign), Marisa Pechillo (University of North Florida), Emilia Thom (University of North Florida), Georgina Wilson Aranguren (University of Florida)

This presentation addresses the theme of the 2022 ADE conference by proposing a rationale and strategies for creating communities of student editors. The author bases his reflections on experiences working with undergraduates at the University of North Florida in the context of four ongoing endeavors: coloniaLab (colonialab.org), North Florida Editorial Workshop (nfew.org), Editing the Eartha MM White Collection (unfdhi.org/earthawhite), and the ViolaMuse Digital Archive (violamuse.unfdhi.org). He considers the advantages of such interaction to students, who through these communities can participate in hands-on collaborative research and find opportunities to take leadership, engage in peer mentoring, and present their work in public settings. He reflects on the ways these communities can bring together students from various disciplines and provide an entry point into editing for individuals in fields outside the Humanities. He proposes methods for fostering this type of community through dedicated courses on editing, editorial projects in subject area courses, and the development of ongoing projects that take place outside of a course setting. He touches on ways to harness institutional resources in support of these communities and looks at possibilities for inter-institutional collaboration on student editing endeavors.

This presentation will be followed by a panel of student editors.
