Job Announcement: Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Center at Dickinson State University

DICKINSON STATE UNIVERSITY (DSU), a regional comprehensive institution within the North Dakota University System, is seeking a Director of the Theodore Roosevelt Center. The director collaborates with DSU personnel and partners to implement the initiatives of the TR Center, including the continued development of the Theodore Roosevelt Digital Library and all educational programming designed and/or hosted by the Center.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree
  • Minimum of two years of successful experience in a higher education setting.
  • Experience working with a wide array of volunteers, general public, and staff members.
  • Minimum of two years successful supervisory experience

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:

  • Extraordinary organizational and administrative skills.
  • Proven ability to communicate with and create partnerships with public, private and academic sectors of the community, including DSU faculty, staff, and students.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, initiate, and implement effective educational programs, projects, services, and especially conferences/symposia.
  • Proven managerial skills.
  • Knowledge of best practices in metadata and technology resources for the digital humanities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaborative, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively, in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Proven ability to manage budgets and fundraise.
  • Ability to travel some.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph.D.
  • Management experience in a historical/cultural organization.

COMPENSATION PACKAGE:

  • Salary range of $67,000-72,000/annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience

POSITION DETAILS:

  • 1105 Administrative/Managerial
  • 12 month term (July 1 – June 30)

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:

  • Maintain and strengthen partnerships with internal and external stakeholders
    • Collaborate with Dickinson State University and NDUS personnel (such as librarians, IT and the DSU Foundation), as well as other partners, to implement the initiatives of the TR Center.
    • Maintain relationships with stakeholders in the region and across the state.
    • Oversee the planning, preparation and implementation of the annual Theodore Roosevelt Symposium
    • Coordinate meetings (live or by videoconference) with the Theodore Roosevelt Center’s Board of Advisors
    • Cooperate with DSU Heritage Foundation to provide information on Theodore Roosevelt Center projects to potential donors o Other related duties as assigned.
  • Lead the development of the digital library, monitoring and directing the most effective use of hardware, software, staff, workflows, and external partnerships.
    • Identify, establish, and cultivate relationships with potential partner organizations.
    • Negotiate agreements for digitization of materials in accord with project specifications.
    • In collaboration with the University staff members (grant writing, e.g.) and the DSU Foundation, seek resources to digitize new materials, as needed.
    • Supervise staff working on the project.
    • Hire, train, and supervise summer interns.
    • Ensure appropriate ongoing content creation for the website.
    • Coordinate with Social Sciences faculty, the director of the Theodore Roosevelt Honors Leadership Program, and other appropriate staff to engage students with the source documents wherever possible, in ways that enhance the University’s academic mission.
  • Develop and maintain exhibits and research library in Pulver Hall
    • Direct staff members, contractors, and/or Advisory Board members in the development of new exhibits.
    • Recruit and supervise volunteers and/or student interns to act as docents, library supervisors, or other necessary positions to supplement Theodore Roosevelt Center staff.
    • Coordinate with DSU library staff the acquisition and cataloging of materials for the research library.
    • Manage the DSU Pulver Hall research library and archives.
  • Public relations and marketing
    • Cooperate with University Relations staff and appropriate others to design and develop marketing pieces and other publications of the Theodore Roosevelt Center.
    • Represent the Theodore Roosevelt Center at various germane community, national, and international events.
    • Coordinate and participate in appropriate media interviews to promote the work of the Theodore Roosevelt Center.
    • Maintain a schedule of active scholarship in publication related to promoting the work of the TR Center.
  • Financial management and grant writing/management
    • Prepare and administer the TR Center budget, under the President’s supervision.
    • Cooperate with University staff (grant writer, e.g.) and DSU Heritage Foundation to identify possible grant funding sources and prepare grant applications.
    • Administer grants.
