Manuscript Editor, Book Publications Program, Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture

The Institute, located in Williamsburg, Virginia, is a recognized center for scholarship on the colonial, Revolutionary, and early national periods of the United States and related histories. Employment at the Institute provides a collegial and intellectually stimulating environment revolving around research, conferences, and publication. The prize-winning book program produces four to six books a year. The College of William and Mary and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation are the Institute’s cosponsors.

The Manuscript Editor is responsible for copyediting book manuscripts at the Institute. The Manuscript Editor reports to the Editor of Publications and consults with the Managing Editor on book projects. Duties include editing for grammar, sense, and Institute style; verifying citations and quotations; proofreading; communicating with the author; preparing the final manuscript for electronic submission to the University of North Carolina Press; maintaining the production schedule; proofing page proofs; preparing the index for typesetting; checking final copy for the cover and catalogue. In addition, the Manuscript Editor is involved in training and supervising M.A.-editorial apprentices and exhibiting Institute books at conferences.

Applicants should have professional expertise in copyediting and proofreading scholarly manuscripts, a facility in using electronic editing software (MSWord), and a familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style. M.A. preferred, B.A. degree required, with a rich background in Augustan British literature or in classical or romance languages a plus. Qualifying applicants will be required to take a copyediting and a proofreading test.
