Public History Director Position (Job #10312).

The School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for a tenured or tenure-eligible Associate Professor position as director of its Public History Program. This program, which partners with the Scholarly Publishing Program, is among the country’s flagship graduate programs in public history. The program prepares MA and PhD candidates for a variety of professional careers in such areas as historic resource management and historic preservation, community history, and museums. It also has interdisciplinary relationships with programs in museum studies and archives. Students work on federal, state, and local projects, as well as serving internships. Core faculty members teach courses in scholarly publishing and various areas of public history; they are highly active in professional associations, and serve on national and international boards. The public history faculty also includes public history practitioners in the Phoenix area as well as participating members of the History Faculty. The program is supported by the Noel Stowe Endowment. The successful candidate for this position will teach MA and PhD level courses in public history, theory, and practice and will develop and teach undergraduate courses.

Salary and startup will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications. Required qualifications. PhD in History, American Studies or a closely affiliated discipline; demonstrated experience in program administration, preferably in an academic institution; demonstrated experience in research and teaching appropriate to rank; evidence of excellence in research and teaching; experience in public history practice. Desired qualifications. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience working actively with local, state, and regional public history communities; engaging in grant writing and fundraising; collaborating across disciplines and/or with outside constituents; and/or developing opportunities for students to study, intern, and publish in a range of settings and media. The specialization is open, but expertise in digital history projects and training will be particularly welcome.
