Departmental Overview
The Mark Twain Papers contain the voluminous private papers of Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Mark Twain). Complementing and greatly enlarging the core archive of original documents is a working archive of photocopies and transcriptions of documents held elsewhere. This working archive consists primarily of letters written by Clemens, his wife, and their three daughters. It also includes letters to each of them, the dozen major literary manuscripts (published and unpublished) that are known to survive, books from Mark Twain’s personal library, photographs, drawings, and other artifacts. This assemblage of copies is the result of global cooperation among hundreds of institutions and individuals since the 1960s, and has been a primary focus of the Mark Twain Project.
Responsibilities
Involves providing a variety of IT services in a unit. Assignments include:
- Applications programming development and maintenance, systems administration, desktop support, business systems analysis, web applications development and/or maintenance, or a combination of these and/or other IT functions;
- Analyzes, develops, implements, and maintains local IT infrastructure for a dynamic, long-term, and high-profile digital scholarly edition located within a manuscript archive devoted to Mark Twain;
- Acts as technical lead and quality assurance manager for hybrid digital and print publications;
- Develops and manages XML production workflow for marktwainproject.org (MTPO, the edition’s publication web site);
- Plans, schedules, and coordinates electronic production of books, manuscript transcriptions, promotional and other material;
- Supervises the work of editors who are producing XML files;
- Provides clear documentation, guidelines, and instructions for their production;
- Participates in the encoding of texts;
- Develops and deploys text conversion scripts;
- Contributes to the planning of infrastructure and/or design changes to MTPO website: may include database-driven website development, or producing communications using the web, which entail writing, editing, designing, production and/or programming.
Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated proficiency with scripting languages such as Python, Perl, and shell scripting. Experience with automating processes using ant or xmlproc;
- Demonstrated proficiency of HTML, CSS, JS. Website development and design experience preferred;
- Advanced knowledge of XML and associated technologies, e.g. xsd, rng, odd, XSL. Xquery, and schematron. Facility with encoding standards such as TEI and EAD.
- Has knowledge of applications programming technologies, tools and protocols.
- Knowledge of MS Access or other relational database systems. Knowledge of VBA for Word and Access, or willingness to learn.
- 3+ years project management experience. Ability to provide lucid technical documentation, set priorities/deadlines, train colleagues, and delegate tasks.
Preferred Qualifications
- Understanding of digitization technologies, standards, and best practices for still images.
- Understanding of digital library metadata standards, e.g. METS, MODS, MADS, and PREMIS.
Salary & Benefits
- The annual salary range for this position is $67,500 – $90,000.
