Associate Editor for the Hemingway Letters Project
The Hemingway Letters Project is seeking an Associate Editor to be involved in all aspects of the preparation of The Letters of Ernest Hemingway, the authorized multi-volume scholarly edition being published by Cambridge University Press. This appointment will be at the faculty rank of Research Associate or Senior Research Associate, depending on qualifications; a 12-month full-time, non-tenure track, three-year appointment (contingent on continuing funding) with a very good possibility of renewal, and an anticipated start date of August 2017. The successful candidate will work closely with the General Editor and in close coordination and communication with other Project personnel.
We are seeking an individual with demonstrated scholarly accomplishments who possesses the knowledge and skills to contribute significantly to all aspects of the Project. Responsibilities include establishing source texts, transcribing letters, verifying transcriptions against original documents, locating and researching extant incoming correspondence to inform annotations, conducting scholarly research using print and digital information sources, conducting archival research, writing and documenting annotations, preparing editorial apparatus, proofreading, copyediting, indexing, and preparing manuscripts for the publisher.
The Associate Editor is expected to represent the Project to scholars and the general public through speaking, writing, and other activities. Responsibilities will include other Project-related writing and communications, including preparing proposals, reports, publicity materials, and presentations; corresponding with external contacts; and communicating with volume editors and other participating scholars.
The Associate Editor is also expected to be involved in long-range planning, managing workflow and monitoring progress of volumes, coordinating on-site Project personnel and overseeing daily operations, and training research assistants and off-site scholars in research methods and Project protocols.
A Ph.D. in English or a related field combined with extensive documentary editing or related research is required. Also required are strong knowledge of 20th-century American literature and literary modernism; excellent research skills using print and digital information resources and archival sources; excellent writing, editing, and speaking skills; and proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Experience with applications of information technology for collaborative work is desirable. Other necessary attributes include the ability to work well under deadlines on multiple tasks at various stages of progress, excellent interpersonal skills, and a meticulous attention to detail.
