Editorial Assistant Position, Adams Papers, Massachusetts Historical Society
The Adams Papers at the Massachusetts Historical Society seeks a full-time editorial assistant to begin work in fall 2016. Since its establishment in 1954, the Adams Papers has published fifty volumes of the diaries, letters, and other writings of the Adams family of Massachusetts; currently, we publish two series, Adams Family Correspondence and the Papers of John Adams. Work on the Adams Papers provides a unique opportunity to explore the fields of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century history through the correspondence and writings of one of America’s first families.
The editorial assistant provides editorial and administrative support for the project. Editorial duties include transcribing manuscripts, checking footnotes, proofreading, helping with indexes, undertaking minor research, updating the online catalog, and assisting in desktop publishing of the volumes. Administrative duties include correspondence, light event planning, assistance with grant reporting, file management, fielding reference questions and assisting researchers, and miscellaneous secretarial work.
Requirements include a BA in history or related field (MA or focus on early American republic a plus); editorial experience; familiarity with Microsoft Office; excellent organizational and time-management skills; capacity for detailed, accurate work; ability to work well with others in a small office. Familiarity with documentary editing and basic XML a plus. This one-year position is grant-funded and renewable subject to continued funding.
