David Chesnutt’s headstone
David R. Chesnutt, an early pioneer in digital humanities, died on December 15, 2014. http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/MontgomeryAdvertiser/obituary.aspx?pid=173539919
He donated his body to the University of Vermont’s Medical School so he could continue to be of service to other – his commitment in life and death. As a result of his donation, he has no grave – no headstone. Instead of a headstone to mark David’s existence in the world, the University of South Carolina has established the David R Chesnutt Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund at the USC Educational Foundation.
The scholarship(s) will provide support for promising students on the USC Columbia campus, at any level (undergraduate or graduate), to travel to conferences and workshops related to Digital Humanities. In keeping with David’s career in documentary editing and his work to develop ways to publish primary documents on the Web, eligible students’ work must involve electronic discovery, access, use, or interpretation of intellectually valuable primary documents.
The scholarship(s) will be awarded on a competitive basis by the Center for Digital Humanities’ Campus Advisory Board.
Officially the fund is known as: B11983 – David R. Chesnutt Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund
If you want to contribute to the fund, write a check to the USC Educational Foundation and then add either the fund number or the name of the fund on the “memo” line of a check (or in an accompanying note) to ensure the gift will be properly deposited.
Send checks to the USC Educational Foundation, 1027 Barnwell St, Columbia, SC 29201.
