Not for Your Eyes: Editing Private Documents for Publication
The editing of documents not originally intended for publication poses special challenges. Such documents often are difficult to locate in the first place, and their presentation can be complicated by idiosyncratic features that are essential to their nature but that are not ordinarily represented in print or familiar to modern readers. This session, sponsored by the Association for Documentary Editing, seeks papers that address editing issues especially associated with documents such as letters, journals, diaries, and similar materials (including those written in private codes) that were not intended to be published. We welcome proposals that consider possible goals of such editions and ways of best achieving those goals, whether in printed or electronic form.
